How to Dress for Passover Seder

Are you attending passover seder and you’re not sure what to wear?
The key to dressing appropriately and fashionable for passover dinner is modesty. The more conservative you dress, the better.
If you opt to wear a dress or skirt for passover seder, do make sure that the skirt is of an appropriate length (i.e. knee-length or longer).
Nevertheless, traditionally, skirts and dresses should be long (past the knee), as should sleeves on your dress or blouse. No low-cut dresses.
In many conservative orthodox families, wearing pants to passover seder is seen as disrespectful.
So, if this is your first time attending passover seder and you’re uncertain of the familiy’s traditions and practices, wear a dress or skirt, to be on the safe side. Simplicity is key. You don’t want to undresses, but you most certainly don’t want to overdress either.

New Books Celebrate Fashion Illustration

“For however much I enjoy photographers, I have to admit their work is done to the detriment of design. In the case of an illustration, it is the opposite. The design is well and truly present, alive.”
So writes Yves Saint Laurent in his forward to Drawing Fashion: The Art of Kenneth Paul Block (Pointed Leaf Press, $95), a lushly oversized monograph on the life and work of the celebrated illustrator. Together with Fashion Illustration by Fashion Designers (Chronicle Books, $40), the two spring releases spotlight an art that has all but fallen off the page.
Block, now in his 80s, rose to prominence as a staff illustrator for Women’s Wear Daily. His three-decade run ended unceremoniously in 1992, when the trade paper acknowledged photography’s dominance by dismissing the entire illustration department on one day.
At his peak, Block covered the collections and society for the newspaper, sitting front row at couture shows, and turning courtroom artist during Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis’ lawsuit against paparazzo Ron Galella.
Block’s broad, watercolor brushstrokes helped define the work of Halston, Saint Laurent and Perry Ellis, and influenced future fashion stars, including Isaac Mizrahi, who remembers pinning the pages to a corkboard above his desk. “More than any single designer,” Mizrahi writes, Block “gave New York fashion its sophistication.”

At some point, each and everyone of us has flipped through a fashion magazine, only to find a photo of a celebrity in a gorgeous dress or adorable top.
At first, we get excited and try to find out where we can find the dress or top worn by the celebrity, but then something happens…”I could never pull off that look,” we say to ourselves.
Are we jumping to conclusions, experiencing a moment of self-doubt, or are we just being brutally honest with ourselves when it comes to fashion?

What Type of Jewelry and Accessories Should I Wear?

Depending on the mood and/or occasion, you’ll find that there are times when you should play up a dress with more jewelry and accessories. On the other hand, if your dress is not a solid color and isn’t very plain (i.e. rhinestones, beading, etc.), you should keep your jewlery and accessories to a minimum.
So what kind of jewelry and accessories should be worn if you’re going to a formal event? It largely depends on the event. If you’re not the guest of honor, try not to outdress the person who is being celebrated.
Color is a very important part of accessorizing. If you’ve opted to wear a red dress, look for jewelry with a hint of ruby. If you’re wearing green or olive, emerald green is a beautiful color if it appears subtly in jewelry (such as necklace sets and bracelets).
Most importantly, always remember to match jewelry with jewelry. In other words, if you’re wearing gold–go gold all the way. Don’t pair silver earrings with a gold necklace. It will only take away from your beautiful dress!
